The Black Bear Inn was built in 1915 as a Queen Ann Style Victorian home by Fred and Lessie Ray. The Inn was named after the Black Bear Trail which was a scenic wilderness route from Quebec to the Florida Keys that ran directly in front of the Ray’s home. Northern owners of the nearby soapstone mine requested room and board for themselves and their families to stay and the beautiful residence became an inn in 1927. The Black Bear Inn was written up in State magazine at the best B&B east of the Mississippi with fine food, attention to detail and touting the largest bathroom in the South. The Black Bear Inn served up to 100 people a day and operated until Lessie’s death in 1960.
In 2009, Ken, Raney and Elizabeth Rogers came to the Inn to renovate and reopen its stately rooms to the public once again after 50 years of inactivity. Ken, a landscape designer and contractor, Raney, a professional artist, and Liz, a massage therapist, are combining their skills and passion into a venue offering spa services, weddings, and special events as well as art gallery and workshop space. The gorgeous, pastoral scenery and exquisite gardens create a sense of time gone by and tranquility for today.

The Inn is conveniently located off Highway 221 and easily accessible to downtown
West Jefferson shopping, dining, and lodging as well as to Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk.
